Ground Penetrating Radar – Seeing the Invisible World Beneath Our Feet

HISTORY / ORIGIN

The first patent for radar itself was issued in 1910. Dr. Hülsenbeck improved depth resolution by using pulses instead of continuous waves. W. Stern used ground penetrating radar for the first time in 1929 to measure a glacier's depth. During the 1970s, military applications expanded research, and the first affordable consumer equipment became available in 1975. As part of the Apollo 17 mission in 1972, an airborne radar called ALSE was sent into lunar orbit.

TYPES OF GPR


Time-Domain GPR – EM energy is emitted as an impulse, and the reflected signal is processed with a sample receiver that records variations with time.


Frequency-Domain GPR – Uses continuous wave signals at varying frequencies.


Airborne GPR – Used for large-scale surveys from aircraft or satellites.


Ground-Coupled GPR – Antenna is in contact with the ground surface.


MATERIALS / KEY FEATURES

GPR systems consist of three main components: the control unit, the transmitter, and the receiver. The antenna emits electromagnetic waves of a specific frequency into the ground, and microwaves are reflected back to the antenna receiver at different travel times and signal intensities. Higher frequencies provide higher resolution but cannot penetrate as far as lower frequencies.
